Is it even important to be a gourmet? If someone wants to live like an ascetic, why should they strive for gourmet taste? Perhaps because most people think they love food, yet they stuff themselves with rubbish — in other words, junk food. Eating hot dogs by the roadside every day doesn’t make you a gourmet. In fact, the ascetic who eats porridge daily but takes the time to sit down and whisper a little ritual before eating might be closer to it.
Of course, just because something comes from far away and lands on your table once in a lifetime doesn’t automatically make it gourmet — after all, trash can travel long distances too. But bold experimentation is definitely part of it. In fact, you could say this is the second pillar of being a gourmet. If you’re more afraid of bad food than you are curious about new tastes, you’ll never be one.
A gourmet is conscious. They have experience with food, know where it’s worth sourcing from and where it isn’t. There’s no such thing as a universally “good” or “bad” restaurant — every place has its own value, which a gourmet recognizes and seeks out depending on their mood. Without experience, you can’t be a gourmet. If someone often chooses poorly, it shows they’re not there yet.
For a gourmet, every dish comes with a story. They don’t just consume organic molecules — they recall and create memories. It’s the ratatouille feeling — you’ve surely seen the film!? For a gourmet, every meal is infused with effort and adventure, because to collect food stories, you need to live boldly and curiously. The key word is personal. Every dish is like a good friend, with a soul and a shared story.
And now for the toughest question: can a simple one-pot meal or street food be gourmet? While gourmet dining often means a symphony of flavors with many ingredients, mixing mismatched components won’t make you a gourmet — or even exotic. A one-pot dish can absolutely be gourmet, as long as it carries that magic and personal touch that only a true gourmet can recognize.
